I've got a great poem we can cover

For that, you get another essay

I'll expect a slice of cake when

And don't cheap out with the store-

Earlier, when you were noisy and

out of classroom, going all over

That's why we worked so long and

at the cost of its spiritual wealth...

Are we up to the Kamakura era yet?
I guess not... Oh man, we haven't
even reached the Nara era...
Well, let's get through it real quick,
then. First, the Taika Reforms.
They happened in the year 645.
Just remember that.
Huh? What were they about? Oh,
nothing important, really.
Later on, in 710, there was the
Heijo-Kyo. That wraps it up for
the Nara era.

Nara era.
What's the name of the anthology
consisting of about 4500 poems
leading up to the Nara era?
...I don't feel like picking on
anyone today, so I'll just tell you.
It's the Man-yoshu.
We're supposed to cover the Kokin
Wakashu, too, but I don't really
care. Ask Mr. Ekoda, if you want.
Argh... I don't care about any of this!
I wanna get to the Sengoku era!

Men get stressed from dealing with

When they seek comfort at home...
It passes on to their wives. They,
in turn, relieve their stress through
personal hobbies.
That's how a successful marriage

I didn't. I couldn't care less about

think of it as another boring field trip,
for social studies.
Going out into the real world is
pretty tough. By the end of the

Myself, I'm glad for the chance to

Does anyone have any fond memories
from the trip they'd like to share
with the class?

"There's a girl right behind you!"

But as far as he knew, the room

Those Apathy Syndrome rumors have
been all over TV lately. Same with
those cult members...
How did things end up this way?
Well, this is what they said about it
on TV yesterday...
It's a "disease" born from modern
society, where the darkness in their
hearts completely takes over.
They say it's inevitable in a hope-
less society like ours, and that
its victims are victims of society.
But I think that's wrong. Everyone
has darkness in their hearts, but
they fight against it, right?
It's true that hope isn't something
you come across so easily in our
society...
But that hardly gives them license
to give up! They should be able to
stand on their own two feet!
...Anyway, that's what I thought.
I hope you were paying attention,

is bound to be on the final exam.

I'm Edogawa, in charge of integrative
learning. Eeeheehee...
In this class, I'll ease all your worries.
It's psychotherapy through magic!
All right, everyone, be very, very quiet.
No talking... Silence!
Were you surprised to hear me
bring up magic?
It's a recent proposal, so it's not
well-known yet...
Here it is: Those who believe will be
saved.
Study hard, and I can beat your
weak minds into shape! Eeeheehee...
Now then! Let's get on with our
first lecture, on the basics of magic.
Who can use magic, and who cannot?
That'll be our starting point.
Some of you might think that magic
lets you do absolutely anything...
Pulling pranks on people, hurting
your enemies...
If that's what you think, then you'll
never learn magic.
It's true of both eastern and western
sorcery...
Those with wicked hearts will either
be powerless, or be driven to ruin.
There's one more thing that can't be
forgotten when learning magic.
That is... a "master."
You should aspire to become as good
as your predecessors, especially if
you're studying difficult magic.
If you don't have a master, learning
the black arts will be impossible.
When you begin your training, you'll
have to live in two worlds at once:
the real world, and the dark realm.
If you can't distinguish between the two,
you're headed for certain disaster.
That's why the presence of a master
is of the utmost importance!
With that in mind, I'll move on to
meditation, a standard practice in
magical training.
I've got some handouts for you...

The next chapter discusses the problems
of the Kamakura shogunate...
Kamakura is cool and all, but it can't beat
the Sengoku era!
Have we covered enough of this yet?
I can skip over to the Sengoku era, yeah?
All right, let's take a close look at the
Sengoku era, from the beginning.
As you all know, it's generally agreed
that a major factor leading up to the
Sengoku era was the Ohnin War in 1467.
After that, the next big event in the
Sengoku era's formation was the Coup
of Meiou in 1493.

Quiet down, class. It's time to begin
today's lecture. Progredio ado rukem
shiderem...
Mr. Ekoda left work early today,
so today's lecture will be a little
different.
He looked fine, but he claimed he
didn't feel well...
Make sure you know what you're
eating, everyone, before you take
a bite.
Last time, I related some basic
magical knowledge...
Today, I'll add to that with a
discussion of meditation.
But first, let's review the ways
that magicians meditate.
To heighten your creative impulse,
the source of all magical power...
Carefully observe a real-world object
and recreate it in your head to the
last detail.
That's the Western style, but I'd
also like to talk about the Eastern
style of meditation.
Meditation was actually refined in
the East...
Modern magicians adapted Eastern
meditation for their own original
style.
Straighten yourself, take a deep
breath, and concentrate.
Those are the basics of Eastern
meditation.
You don't need much to meditate.
All that's required is a quiet
environment and some time.
It doesn't take long, but you should
allot at least 15 minutes for it.
Now for the practicalities... First,
your posture. Choose a position
you're comfortable in.
Sitting cross-legged is easy for
most, or you could try the full
lotus position, called kekkafuza.
You can also meditate while sitting
on a chair. Any position will work,
as long as you're relaxed.
Once you can breathe comfortably,
cover or close your eyes and relax.
Now that you've prepared yourself
physically, let's focus on your
mind and soul.
Imagine a symbol... Perhaps a large
tree, or the moon.
If you wish, it could even be the
god of your own faith.
However, do not empty your mind.
That would actually be foolhardy.
You run the risk of losing control
of yourself.

meditation is to imagine some sort
of symbol.
The Christian practice of prayer,

meditation go smoothly, however.
It can be very dangerous to plumb

By keeping a clear symbol in mind,

Please take your seats. Solve et

Your regular teacher has fallen ill,
so I'll be substituting today.
Summer vacation begins tomorrow...
That's what happens when you let
yourself get careless. Eeeheehee.
Today, I'll give an introductory
lesson on alchemy, a branch of
magic focused on attaining wealth.
Do you like money? Of course you
do... Who among us doesn't?
It's human nature to want what one
doesn't have. There's no escaping it.
Long before the days of King Midas,
humans sought a way to create gold
from base elements.
It wasn't their dream to gain gold
like King Midas, by touching things...
Rather, they conceived of converting
cheap metals, such as iron or copper,
into precious gold.
That is alchemy.
Whatever their incentive for creating
the science, it's certain that alchemy
has significantly influenced history.
The concept of alchemy originated
in Greek philosophy.
Around 500 A.D., it was further
developed in Arabia, which became
the center of alchemical studies...
The science later gained popularity
in Europe as well.
An interesting, little-known branch
of alchemy was created in China,
called Rentan Jutsu.
This form of alchemy seeks to make
an elixir of immortality, instead of
a magic recipe for gold.
Either way... the most important
substance in the practice of alchemy
is mercury, or quicksilver.
It was thought that mercury could be
used to create the Philosopher's Stone,
which would in turn generate gold.
Alchemists performed endless research,
using various kinds of equipment and
experimental methods.
Today, people believe that if not for
the alchemists' trial and error, there
would be no chemistry as we know it.
But there's no indication that a
Philosopher's Stone was ever actually
made.
In a way, it's one of the greatest
tragedies of world history...
Now, alchemy has also influenced
human psychology.
Carl Jung, among others, thought that
the creation of the Philosopher's Stone
is related to the human mind.
Jung believed that the process of
psychotherapy is similar to the way
a Philosopher's Stone would work...

is mercury, or quicksilver.
It was thought that mercury could be
used to create the Philosopher's Stone,
which would in turn generate gold.
Alchemists performed endless research,
using various kinds of equipment and
experimental methods.
Today, people believe that if not for
the alchemists' trial and error, there
would be no chemistry as we know it.
But there's no indication that a
Philosopher's Stone was ever actually
made.
In a way, it's one of the greatest
tragedies of world history...
Now, alchemy has also influenced
human psychology.
Carl Jung, among others, thought that
the creation of the Philosopher's Stone
is related to the human mind.
Jung believed that the process of
psychotherapy is similar to the way
a Philosopher's Stone would work...

...In conclusion, I think it's a shame
to give up on alchemy when we've come
so far.
It's better for young adults to strive
for unusual goals, that they might
lead more exciting lives.
After all, from the perspective of
ancient peoples, modern science may as
well be magic or alchemy.
If you work very hard, you might be
able to discover your own form of
magic.
But I think that will do for today.
Enjoy your summer.

Class is now in session. Salamander

Ms. Toriumi is feeling ill today...
Again. I'll be her replacement today.
People tend to overstuff themselves
during autumn. Mind your manners...
It just so happens that I have a
lesson prepared... Today we'll look
at summoning magic.
The topic at hand is magic used to
summon angels and demons to our
world.
First... what is summoning magic?
It's when a magician summons a
spiritual presence and controls it
to achieve his or her goals.
Like shamanism, summoning magic can
be seen throughout the world in
different eras.
It's widely seen in books, movies,
better video games, and so on...
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust
was instrumental in the popularization
of summoning magic.
There are many examples of summoning
magic I'd like to share, but we don't
have that much time...
But here are a few of them.
In the Middle Ages, John Dee and
Edward Kelley joined forces in Europe
to summon an angel.
Later, in the 19th century, the
magician Eliphas Levi summoned the
spirit of Apollonius.
Following in his footsteps was Aleister
Crowley, who in the 20th century
summoned the guardian angel Aiwass.
What else... There's Neoplatonism,
focusing on the doctrine of summoning
a guiding spirit called a daemon.
In Voudoun, the Houngan may summon
a spirit called a Loa.
And in Japan...
An incantation in a religion called
Vajrayana can be considered a
summoning ritual.
By performing this ritual, the summoner
tries to fuse with Buddha to gain
his power.
I could go on and on... there are
countless examples of summoning magic.
But by studying many different forms,
you can begin to see a pattern.
Once magic circles, spells, and the
like were established as part of the
ritual, they saw more common use, and...

Let's begin today's lecture, shall we?
Abiraun ken, basara datoban...
I'll be teaching today because...
Maybe it's best you don't know.
Anyway, it was a spur of the moment
assignment, so I had to devise a
lesson plan quickly...
And the first thing that came to mind
was a seminar on practical magic.
For instance, breathing techniques.
Some people would say it doesn't count,
but breathing and magic are actually
very closely related.
That's because breathing affects more
than your body... it influences the
mind as well.
The ancient Greek word for breath was
"pneuma," and it was considered crucial
in medical science of the day.
Pneuma later came to refer to kindly
spirits of humans in Gnostic
Christianity.
That was when breathing came to be
recognized as playing a crucial role
in magic.
There are many applications I could
name. One's breathing technique is
an important factor in Yoga.
There also exists a procedure called
Ibuki in Shinto that revolves around
breathing.
From these examples, breathing
techniques spread around the world
through the influence of magic.
But back to practical matters...
Let me show you something called
Tan t'ien breathing.
Some say that Gautama Buddha himself
practiced this method.
It's a type of abdominal breathing
in which you focus your energy on
a point, called a tan t'ien...
First, you must know where your
tan t'ien is located.
It's about three finger-widths beneath
the navel.
Why would such a place on your body
be considered a special spot, and get
a name like this?
It's because the tan t'ien is where
the most energy can be charged.
Notice how, if you send strength to the
tan t'ien, you can't feel strength
anywhere else in your body...
Your tan t'ien absorbs your body's
strength, stabilizing the mind and
the body.
Let's try doing some tan t'ien
breathing now.
If this is your first time, it may be
a good idea to keep your hand on the
tan t'ien to focus your consciousness.
Once you pinpoint your tan t'ien,
take a few breaths.
Imagine that the air you pull into
your body is centering on the tan
t'ien...
Then, slowly and deeply, breathe
through your nose.
Put some energy into your tan t'ien
until you can feel it harden, then
breathe out.
Repeat this process...
But know one thing.
If you're doing it correctly, you
shouldn't be feeling any pain.
Simply breathing deeply, in and out,
shouldn't cause you pain.
If that happens, there's something
inhibiting your mind...
